Capricorn or Capricornus? It is a question we are asked often. The answer is both, and the difference says something about how we design.

Capricorn: the sign

Capricorn comes from the Latin capricornus, meaning horned goat, and it is the name used in astrology. An earth sign, Capricorn covers those born between 22 December and 19 January, and is known for ambition, discipline and a practical, patient kind of strength.

Capricornus: the constellation

Capricornus is the astronomer's name for the same patch of sky: one of 88 recognised constellations, found in the region known as the Sea. Its stars sketch the outline of a sea-goat, a mythical creature with the front of a goat and the tail of a fish.

Capricorn is the sign. Capricornus is the sky it comes from.
